These are my reflections on those Scriptures that God has used to comfort me as I have travelled through the "valleys of Shadow of death." I am hoping that they will comfort those fellow-travelers who are going through the wilderness of life. At times, I will also write blogs relevant to mental illness, particularly as it relates to issues of faith, theology and community. All Scriptures used here will be from New American Standard Bible, unless otherwise specified.

He is Sovereign Over All

Posted on November 20, 2014 by Elahe Hessamfar

surrenderThe LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and raises up. The LORD makes poor and rich; He brings low, He also exalts. He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the ash heap; to make them sit with nobles, and inherit a seat of honor; for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s and He set the world on them. He keeps the feet of His godly ones, but the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; for not by might shall a man prevail. 1 Sam.2:6-9

What a comfort! What a promise! It is not up to us! It is all in His providential hands. Hallelujah!

We worship and serve a God who is mighty, who is good, who is gracious and compassionate, who is our Father, who is our LORD, who is our friend. He never rejoices in the destruction even of the wicked (Ezek.33:11), let alone of His own children. So whatever is perplexing you today, whatever is burdensome, mysterious, and painful, is not a random occurrence. Don’t blame yourself for being too stupid, or too sinful, or too insensitive, or too stubborn, or too lustful, or too fleshly. All that you are dealing with is part of the drama of life, orchestrated by the King of kings and the Lord of lords, to open your eyes, to help you grow, to teach you something, to protect you against an empty success, or promotion, or relationship, that would have put you on the road to destruction. Our Father in heaven knows the pain you are enduring and His grace is sufficient for all our challenges. Go to Him and fall at His feet. He will cover you in His grace that is beyond human comprehension. Put your burdens before Him: your sins, your shame, your guilt—all that has been a stumbling block preventing His peace from engulfing you. Be amazed at what He will accomplish in your life by taking away your dependence on anything but Him. He will fill your void with His love in a way you would never have thought possible. He will heal your wounds better than any other physician. Your spirit will soar when you realize that indeed all is well! He is sitting on His throne and nothing happens without a good reason under His control.

All things are in subjection under His feet: cancer, death, financial loss, divorce, mental illness, physical disability, life failures, low self-esteem, etc. So surrender and let the Wonderful Counselor calm the storms of your soul and hold your hand and lift you up from dust and ashes! You might ask: “What does surrender mean?” It means: Focus on Him, His character, His word and His work in your life that you may hear His voice and that His Light might guide you through a dry wilderness. He will NEVER fail you and forsake you.
